The Spartan Microlights Team

Our History Starts back in 1984 when we first start flying Hang Gliders and Mountain Parachutes (today's paragliders) In just a couple years we have jump in to Trikes and start working on making the first prototypes! Our love for flying all kind of Microlights extended to powered paragliders and powered parachutes, Then the DFS came ...

The DFS story

The DFS trike was designed as a single from the beginning. The trike is streamlined with reliable construction, on the market for over 10 years, with many pilots flying it worldwide. In 2001 we changed the size and engineered a new DFS, more suitable for the USA (Look Kitplanes Magazine Article). The DFS Single can now accommodate a pilot from 120 lb to 325 lb pilot weight. Or from 5.2 ft to 6.6 ft in height, and with HP ranging from 28 - 52 HP. The frame is stronger than ever with Kevlar reinforcement.

The Dual

The idea came when company designer Stefano made the Airbrush drawing below back in 1999. The project started to become reality in 2000 when we made the first prototype. We work on this project for three years to make the plane as perfect as possible, now this beautiful plane is available to you. The DFS Dual PPC or Trike made with the idea to look the same as good as the DFS Single. That was not an easy project, it took three years to materialize. With up to eight hours of Airtime there are places to go.

What is best for you?

The Single

The DFS single is best for pilots looking for a strong frame, light weight, hot looking and easy to assemble. It qualifies for FAA part 103 legal ( USA FAA Part 103 no licence needed) . So if your looking for the best PPC or Trike out there with a competitive pricing and complete flying freedom, the DFS Single is for you.

The Dual

However, if you are looking to give your friend a flying lesson there is the DFS Dual. Our trike is the best looking two place design on the market, beginners feel confidante to go for a ride just by looking on it!. This plane is made with the best material made available to the aircraft industry; for example, for the DFS single & dual we use ACCT (advance composite construction technology). Our planes give us up to 8.5 hours of airtime, a lightweight and very strong frame, and options like amphibian gear, carbon prop guard, and is easy to change from one system to the other. All together with looks that will attract a crowd, the DFS Dual is made especially for you!
PPC or Trike flying?

Powered Parachute flying can be summed up with one word : EASY, if your looking for minimum training time and a more portable machine for smooth flying conditions PPC flying is for you. PPC Flying is very limited to weather conditions and you need to fly only when the wind velocity is low and wind is smooth. (usually early in the morning or late in the afternoon.)

If you are looking for speed distance and flight in variable weather conditions, you will love the Trike system. With speeds of up to 75 mph and easy to fly wings you can definitely cover distance. The glider is foldable and easy to transport, folding time is about 10-20 min. There have been two global circumnavigations done with the trike already. Minimum training time is 10 hours.

However, the DFS is the only plane worldwide that is convertible from one system to the other, you can have the best of both worlds with the DFS. Take a look at the options page for available systems pricing.

The Sky is not the limit, It's only the BEGINNING!

How to fly safe:

Are you NEW to the sport?

Here are guidelines to follow that will help you start your flying career safe:

1)      First you need to make the right decision about the equipment you will be purchasing. Make sure you get professional help, especially if you are a beginner.  Getting used equipment is not always the best idea . These are actual aircrafts that should be purchased from a reputable and professional manufacturer.  By using a professional company, you know that the equipment is airworthy, stable and safe to fly. These are decisions that only the flying professionals can make. You as a beginner or recreational pilot need to speak with a reputable company and seek expert advise from a certified instructor before you purchase any equipment. Remember that these professional pilots and instructors have been flying for years and have competitive experience as well as hundreds of hours of flight time and testing on equipment. Speak with the professional first so you can make the right choice for your purchase! Here at Airsports we can help you make the right choice for equipment and locate an instructor near you!

2)      Start your training and take your time, building a good base is the most important thing .  Start by spending time with your instructor. This is a fun sport and most instructors are in it for fun. Listen to everything they have to say, then go home and study before the next training day so you can be better prepared.  Learning to Fly is like going to school because you need to spend all the time necessary and  study in order learn flying techniques , meteorology  or to pass your written and practical exams.

3)      Start learning the weather like a meteorologist. Microlight flying is a weather sport, the more you know the better you will become and the safer your flight!

4)      Learn the rules and regulation, all Microlight and Ultra-light flying is regulated by part 103 from FAA. First get the book and study it,  then you will have a better understanding on how to fly right and look good in the eyes of everyone.

5)      Make sure you spend all the time necessary in order to understand everything before you tell your instructor you are ready for your first solo flight.

6)      Congratulations, after all this hard work you are now ready for your first solo flight. You are now a beginner pilot not just a student anymore, the next step is building up your experience.

7)      Start flying with more experienced pilots for at least the first year and always remember SAFETY FIRST. Check the weather, if the weather is not good there is always another day to fly!

8)      Join flying clubs and associations and never stop reading, always share knowledge with other pilots and beginners.

9)      Do you like to fly safe and have fun forever? Then remember every flight is like your first flight!

10)  REMEMBER knowledge and teamwork is the road to SAFE fun flying.
